Look how sad they are

WS is about to have a cardiac event and MC looks like he’s been crying for days.

The Quebec government has gone and changed the cinema tax credit regime (CSPC) to the benefit of local and foreign film & TV projects, but to the detriment of locally produced VFX. This reassessment blindsided all the major VFX studios, and judging by the shrieks and howls the cuts are both painful and damaging. This is a surprising fiscal move by a government which typically places corporate interests above all others*. And yet, not only are the interests of several major international (and a few big-to-biggish local) VFX companies being threatened, but so too are those of several major Montreal corporate real estate outfits. Genuinely, I’m shocked.

Without a shred of evidence, and guided only by my fevered imagination, I reckon political donations from each of the respective industrial associations may have been found lacking by the current ruling party: the truly awful CAQ.

Another potential irritant for the government may be the significant amount of international workers brought to (chiefly) Montreal to work for large, international companies. Recently, the prime minister of the Quebec assembly –– a stunning blockhead –– stated there would be no housing crisis at all if it weren’t for all them durn foreigners.

*Generalized racism is also super important for not only the CAQ, but the majority of the voting public here in Quebec.
